21 Something Street

Or something like….. Hey, I’m 21! BUt then yay for me. Hey everyone. Kaitlynn here. Today I am going to just share some of my birthday cheer, or is that Christmas cheer with your. In either case I am super happy that I am finally the big 2-1. Not only can I be considered a full-grown adult, yay, but now I can call my self a twenty-something which sounds so much better than a twenty year old. And yeah, now I can get into clubs when some of the local bands decide to preform at a bar. Now the guy at the door will just have to do some mental math instead of surly face thing that he usually does.

So what can you expect to see on the horizon? Hum, I have a couple of great projects I would love to try. Give you that real rustic look.

I mean there are plenty of ways you can, you know make something that has that rustic country feel that we’re all looking for. The main thing that I am going to be focusing on in the next couples of posts will probably be things that pertains to weddings. I see these things all the time, you can look around on pinterest, I know not that creative. You mostly get to see the same five people posting their stuff on there. And I am such a country nerd, it isn’t funny anymore. I have been looking at things mainly because, yeah, I want to completely redecorate my apartment, it has been this way since I moved in around college.

The idea is to give it a rustic touch and that means I am going to go for the standard Walmart idea of what is rustic. No I am going to make the whole thing fresh, rustic can be anything you want it to be. It isn’t that stuffy look where you just take and slap all of the same things together, throw some pillows around and call it finished. They have better options if you want to find real rustic looking stuff at Ikea. That is here in town. The whole assortment is incredible. And I have tons of stuff circled in the catalog but if I can afford like 10% of it, I’ll be surprised. But the nice thing about rustic and country style is that you really don’t have to spend that much. A couple of the bigger things I am going to try and find used, they will have more character anyway. And then just get the finial touches, you know stuff that you can use to dress up the rest of the rustic decor.

This will anyway make the whole place feel more like its put together over time like the rustic really is supposed to be.

I bet you know what I asked for for my birthday! 😛

Rustic Wedding Invitations

This is one of those things, well, there are a couple that I think I wouldn’t try to do myself, this is one of them. I love the different DIY projects that you can do when you look at rustic weddings.

And I have always been like, if you are going to be doing rustic then you might as well do it yourself. That doesn’t mean that you can’t buy the supplies, or if you are really like, wow, this is the most amazing whatever then I am all for buying it. But one thing that makes me is a little bit like, i’m not sure if this will turn out as good as I would like are DIY wedding invitations.

Now, that has changed, there are a lot of sets and things out there but, the whole idea of printing something that formal at home always seemed a little iffy. But thankfully there are a lot of options that help here. And just because I am for buying the rustic wedding invitations from a professional printer that doesn’t mean that I am not all for customizing the invitations once they are in my hands.

So that is what I wanted to look at with your today, you know customizing them for the maximum in value. Ready?

Rustic Wedding Invitation Styles

Before we look at the style aspect, it is important to note that there are lots of wedding invitations that you can pick with different rustic country styles. Just like the wedding itself there are plenty of different directions that you might end up going with and that means that you will in most cases find the right invitation for the wedding. But I wanted to look at what options you have when it comes to getting the most from the invitation, instead of being like, wow I didn’t know that you could have them with birch or that have mason jar invitations.

Oh, I am not saying that these are the only styles that you can go with. That is the fun part of rustic weddings, you can really do a lot and personalize the whole experience to suite your tastes, and that is really what I think is the best. That ability to change the different pieces to get what is fitting for your whole opinion on what makes a nice wedding experience.

That is the same reason why I love blogging about rustic wedding trends and DIY projects, they never get old and you can keep changing them to fit your style.

Speaking of style, what are a couple of the most common style of invitations you can find?

Well, laser cut is coming on strong now, and while I would love to go into that there are only a couple of sites that really offer the nicest designs when it comes to laser cut.

Sure they are cute, and I mean the detail is like, wow, but I think for doing them yourself that might be too hard.

I tried to see if you could find some sort of machine that can laser cut, I am not sure if there are any out there.

Wedding Paper Divas has some of the best ones that I have seen. The difference between the ones you can find on the Divas’ site and places like Amazon isn’t that big. The major main thing that I noticed is that the under print on Divas is that they offered more unique options. So it is just up to you, and I’d say that it is a matter of taste. But that really does go through as a style per say which is why I mentioned it but didn’t actually give it full attention.

Mason Jars

Mason jars are a big part of the whole rustic wedding scene. And I would hazard to say that they are just as big a part of the invitation.

There are a lot of reasons why it is used in different ways. I can’t imagine a rustic wedding without them. They give a lot of character to the different things that go along with the celebration, like the reception and stuff. But they also have a lot of representation as mason jar wedding invitations.

To be honest I am a little conflicted here. I mean they are great, but I think that they are a little overdone when you use them on the wedding invitations.

Mason jars are rustic, that is why you see them in decorations, as tea lights and what not. But to print them flat, that is a little lame, they need to be felt to fit the wedding.

I will agree that some of the designs that you see, specially the ones that are more realistic look alright. And if you like them then you really should use them, but all things can be overdone.

Don’t wear your mason jars too thin, or they will end up leaving less impression when your guest are back home.

In all fairness, they made the list because without them the list would incomplete.

Burlap and Lace

Yay, burlap with a touch of lace. This is another standard when it comes to rustic wedding invitations. When you see some of the options you have available, you’ll realize why they are so popular.

There are two main styles that come in here. The first one is what you would expect. These are flat printed invitations that are all decorated up with burlap and lace, they are of course pretty affordable. You can get these on all the big shops. Some have better options than others, but when you look in their rustic category you will find fitting options for burlap invitations.

Of course that is one option. But wouldn’t it be cool if you could find the same thing, but instead of the printing you could actually have real burlap?

I thought that you would be pleased. There are actually invitations like this. They either do the whole base as a type of burlap or they can add it in the form of belly bands and such. The same goes when they use lace in the design of the invitation. They are pretty nice, but the price is also a little bit higher than the straight printed options.

For me there really isn’t any other option than the second one, but for many people they might thing that the price difference is too great, then in that case you could go with the simplified version.

If you do, then you will want to keep reading. I have a couple of ideas that make customizing the simpler versions of the invitations so that they have more in common with their more expensive counterparts.

String Lights

This is another one of those standards that you will find in a lot of different peoples wedding celebrations.

It might seem logical to put them on the wedding invitations too, but then if you over do them here the rest of your decorations might feel too orchestrated. I mean, when you see the same designs and imagery everywhere starting with the invitations the wedding will feel a little artificial. The thing about rustic weddings is that you want to make things feel organic.

OK, maybe it would be better to say something like, natural. That’s it.

When you capture a natural, realistic feel for the wedding you can be sure that your guests are going to be taking away a lot more than some memories about well placed decorations.

If you really want to add them to the wedding, and I think that string lights are great I have them in my living room, then it is better to use them in the decorations not on the rustic invitation.

Now, on the other hand some of the imagery of this type of design isn’t bad, and it is actually a good idea to use it on the invitation itself.

Many of the different illustrations your see for this type of invite is the tree. Trees are great when it comes to rustic weddings.

A rustic wedding can really be highlighted by the use of the environment. And a tree or two is a great way for the message of unity, longevity, and eternal love to be carried over.

This is something that is also harder for you to add to the wedding or reception, since its, yeah, a tree.

Here in the city I haven’t really seen a lot of weddings that have been using trees as a focal point. And while I know that they are all over pinterest they just don’t lend themselves to a rustic wedding in our party of the country. And while I know we have plenty of them, have you seen a wedding in the park? I thought so. That is exactly my point.

That is why I think the designs with vintage trees or in general the old tree work well. They also work for the customization tips that we are going to look at just in a second.

Honorable Mentions

I know that I didn’t cover all of the different options you have at your disposal. But then again they are, like a million different ways you can shape a rustic wedding. Picking invitations that fit your rustic wedding is something that you will need to do based on the ideas you have made.

Still, here are a few more that I thought you might like.

I wasn’t sure if this was country or rustic that is why I left it off. Actually I skipped the whole floral aspect of the different invitations you can find because I am sort of allergic to flowers and so I don’t have a lot of experience there. But I think sunflower invitations could work with rustic weddings. Also as centerpieces.

You would just have to see if they are going to be available when you plan the wedding. I’d say in late Summer or early Fall. Which is also when I would suggest that you use them on invitations. It would be sort of dumb to add them to an invitation for a Winter or Spring wedding.

Wagon Wheels, Barns, and Horseshoes

The same goes for these, they feel a little bit like all things that would work better for a country wedding rather than a rustic one. But still, I am sure you could make it work. There are some examples of these types of elements being used in rustic weddings on The Knot.

You just have to see if you would be happier with them as decorations or invite designs.

That is something that many of the different options end up boiling down, too.

OK, I really should say that this deserves more than an honorable mention. The entire boho look is just amazing. It has brought a lot of fresh ideas to the rustic wedding. And the different ways that it can be twisted and turned make it really great. You can go antique and vintage, or you can just go all tribal. The dream catchers make a great touch.

It also works because just a little bit goes a long way. You can use a couple of the trinkets as designs on the card and then at the same time add similar ones to your decoration repartee.

Unlike the other options that we’ve looked at the invitations that have a bohemian look really capture the modern rustic well.

Maybe I should turn this into a full post but that would have to wait for another day.

Right now we will end with a couple of……

Customizing Ideas

The ideas here can only be incomplete. I need to say that now before you’re like, hey she didn’t say you can. Just because I don’t say it doesn’t mean you can’t do that with you invitations. The same needs to be said about the ideas that I am going to share with you. Just because I said you can doesn’t mean that you have to.

One of the nice aspects of a formal invitation is the band that holds it together with the other cards. But they are expensive for just a slip of paper. How can you make your own?

Adding Bands

There are a couple of different ways you can make your own bands. They will help you make the most of the invitations that you buy, allowing you to easily give them the finished feel that you want without taking away from the rustic character you’ve worked so hard to perfect.

  1. Since the whole point is to tie things together I think that this can best be done with well string. In our case twine. But it is the same thing. We just need something that fits with our topic and makes the whole thing look finished. Before you run out and start tying the invitations together, remember, our goal is to make a band. That means you can’t just wrap it around the card once and call it finished. Wrap it around the card and RSVP and whatever else you plan to send about three times. Space the string out about an eight of an inch so that you get about a half inch of coverage. The band should end so that you have the two ends in the front. Then make a nice bow out of them to tie it all together.
  2. Ribbon can be used in the same way. When you pick out a ribbon that fits with your invitations you can finish the rustic invites off so that they make a big impression when the recipient opens the envelope. You should just make sure that the ribbon isn’t so thick that it leaves a bulge on the outside of the envelope. This could lead to problems getting them sent. Pick a broad ribbon that is relatively thin for the best results.
  3. Then there is the burlap options. Like with the ribbon you will really want to pick something out that is thin. There are some pseudo burlap ribbons at the craft store that you could try or you could look online. The results will vary if you pick this approach, but if you don’t want to spend that much on real burlap and lace invitations you can get the same rustic look by adding it yourself.
  4. Speaking of saving on your invitations, one of the most expensive options I’ve seen are the laser cut ones. While they look great, the cut gives them that vintage or antique feel, they could be a little bit cheaper. One idea that I came to that gives you something similar is to use those paper doilies that you put on tea cup plates and fold them around the invitation. There are a couple of those laser cut options that give you something similar. And I like this idea because you also sort of get lace as an added bonus.

Getting more from your rustic wedding invitations is easy if you are willing to customize them after you get the bases printed.

I am sure that I could keep adding to the list, what I am not sure is if that would matter much. You have a ton of ideas here, and I am sure you’re like I got it already. But then I just wanted to make sure you felt like I covered the topic well. There are so many ways you can go with this that it really makes planning a rustic wedding an awesome experience.

Rustic Wedding Ideas

Alright, today I am going to look at rustic weddings. A bit ago I posted about how you can make your own mason jar table center pieces for a couple of dollars apiece instead of the astronomical prices they want for them on places like Etsy.

Anyway that seemed to be pretty popular, with some of you sending me messages in praise for the simple yet effective trick to make your own rustic decorations. Really they work great for anything, you could use them for just about any celebration where you want to capture the rustic charm that is so appealing and then combine that with stuff like weddings or showers. Really, just about anything that fits with rustic country.

Of course you see tons of rustic weddings right now. Some of my friends have been planning them and maybe I have been doing so as well in secret. But that is a story for another day.

All in all there are plenty of other ways for you to use different pieces for your rustic wedding so that is the purpose of today’s post.

I thought that I would focus again one some of the things that you can do for tables. I picked this out because, well, the majority of the time you will be sitting at your table during the reception. We’ll look at the dance floor too, but there isn’t as much you can do there. Of course you can choose a venue that gives you a more rustic dance floor, and that is always a good thing since you won’t have to go and decorate the place up as much.

I mean, of course you will want to put some rustic decorations up even if you choose to host the reception in a barn or whatever, that isn’t what I am saying. But the more you need to give out to make the reception venue fit, well, that is money you won’t have for other parts of the wedding. And there are important things like booze which always makes a wedding a success.

Back to making our wedding tables rustic looking then.

Rustic Reception Tables

Unless you are planning to have the reception in some fancy restaurant or something the likeliness is good that you will need to decorate the tables for your wedding reception. And if you are planning to have a rustic country wedding the need to make them fit with your whole concept is important.

I personally think that the tables are one of the best ways to help sell the idea that this is really a country wedding. I mean, this is what will be making the biggest impression on your guests. They will come in, and the secondary decorations, these are the ones spread throughout the room, will be well secondary. They make a nice backdrop, but the ones that will be the most prominent are the ones that they will see the longest.

When I showed you how to make a mason jar center pieces for the table the idea was to use simple techniques to really make the rustic appeal come over with simple techniques that just about anybody can achieve over the weekend.

Well if you have seen the results you will be aware of just how gorgeous those simple old mason jars can be.

The whole thing took like, I don’t know a couple of hours total. And when you really get the feel for it, well if I had to make a ton of them I could probably do it in a day.

Mason jars Revisited

One things that I had wanted to add to the mason jars, if you really want to make a bit bigger center piece I would suggest getting mason jars in all the different sizes. That mean, jelly, pint, quart, and even gallon if you want to go big.

You can then arrange them around one another, sort of starting from the center with the largest and then spiraling out, or whatever you like best.

This staggered look really gives you the rustic touch that you can see, feel, and in the case of a center piece smell.

Rustic Table Runners

Table runners really add the more formal touch, the elegant look and the rustic charm that we’re after when you pick the right material.

I love rustic so much because the materials that are used are simple, they are affordable, and when they are well combined they give you a one of a kind look that really isn’t easy to find anywhere else.

Of course you can do a lot with a table runner but when you submerge it in the environment, you choose things that are fitting for the theme of the wedding you can make a really big impact on your guests for relatively little money. That is of course if you choose to make the table runner yourself.

If this was anything but a rusitc wedding I would be like, ugg, noway. But since it is a little bit different because of the simplicity of much of the stuff you’ll see in the rustic wedding scene. I mean you can go from having the edges of the burlap table runner finished off with lace to the raw edge that I actually prefer. For me the entire rustic wedding scene differs slightly from the more country look that you can find on facebook, instagram and pinterest. Mainly because when you have the country look things tend to be a little more refined, I don’t know how else to say it. That is to say when I often see lace used with burlap my first thought is like…. That looks more like country. Now, I am not saying that you can’t mix burlap and lace with rustic, that is totally doable. But like, I mean you need to do it differently.

For our table runners here, I would just get a couple of roles of burlap which has the edges finished with a nice stitch and then go and cut them to length. It really doesn’t matter if they fray out. You can always just pull the loose threads out and then it will be fine.

Once you have them cut lay them out and do a couple of tests with them.

For the lace aspect what I like to do is go and put a doily or some form of lace throw under the centerpiece. This helps push the mason jars or whatever you choose off the burlap. As you recall I used burlap to make ribbons on the vases. And that really helps keep the two separate. The flowers will also have a nice background to set themselves off of.

Finishing Touches

What we have so far is the table cloth, usually just a simple white one. You can also pick one with a lace fringe if you’re going in that direction but you don’t have to.

Then you can lay down the burlap table runners that we made.

The optional doily that you can place under the center piece then a combo of mason jars with flowers in them. This gives you a nice layered effect that just is like, wow.

But wouldn’t be nice to take the look one step further? Adding the finishing touch to your tables will help make the entire thing feel more impressive.

What I think looks great here, and this is of course MHO, are some fallen leaves or other natural detail and then a couple of glass beads. They will add the extra sparkle and magic to the wedding which is of course exactly what you want.

Wow, this really turned into an indepth post today. But when you love rustic and the idea of a rustic wedding appeals to you the above tips should really help you focus your attention on details that will make a real difference in how the wedding will look over all.

Mason Jar Rustic Wedding Decorations

OK! Are you ready to get dirty? I know that you are, the chance to break out the craft supplies is just too tempting. Admit it, you have a box filled will all of your supplies just waiting to be taken out of the closet.

So why don’t you go ahead and take the box out. I’m totally excited about the project we’re going to do today.

The idea came to me when I emptied out a canning jar full of tomato juice that my mom sent home with me into some chili I was making. I always loved mason jars and the thing about them is that you can use them for just about a million different projects.

I am going to show you how to turn them into breath taking wedding decorations. When I say breath taking I don’t mean like they are going to steal your breath or anything. That just means you are going to be amazed at how easy it is to make, how cheap they are, and how gorgeous they look when you’re finished.

Before we get started, I need to apologize about the quality of the pix, they were taken on my table and look sort of crappy. The lighting is a mess and yeah, you can see the mason jars OK but that is about it.

Maybe I will go and redo them sometime so that you get a better look at them and you see just how amazing these rustic wedding decorations can be.

When you make anything you will of course need a couple of supplies. The thing I love about making these rustic mason jars for weddings is that they really don’t take any effort and you need something like three things to make them work.

So here is what you are going to need to pick up from where ever you can find these supplies. I had those craft sites that send you all over or put everything together in a neat bundle and expect you to buy them. I actually had the mason jars at home. So I only needed to pick up the burlap ribbon and the paint, well, I had some but it was white. What I did then was pick up some small cans of different colors and mixed it. That helped me get the pastelly colors you see in the pictures. And you thought that they were washed out didn’t you?

No, you will need some mason jars, this is a must for a rustic wedding so you’ll need these anyway.

Some paint, this is really up to you. You can use just about any color, I think that it would be best to pick your wedding color, or if you must you can pick a few colors that will compliment it. Either way just get what you like, the end results are going to be the same.

Then like I said, you can pick up some burlap ribbon, or I am not willing to pay over $10 for the stuff you can find at our art supply so what I did was take a sheet of burlap and I went and cut it into strips. This will give you a more authentic look anyway since a lot of the ribbons are just dressed up material anyway. But the idea is that it needs to be long enough that you can wrap it around the small part of the Ball jar and make a bow.

You can see what I mean in the pictures.

Now for the instructions on how to make a rustic wedding really pop.

When you go to rustic weddings decorations are everything, they are what set the mood and give it the look that I am gaga about. The thing about them though is that they are really easy to make yourself. And I have seen people on Etsy asking a lot for just a couple of these jar vases that we are going to make and thought that that was crazy.

I mean if I can help you save a couple of dollars making your own mason jar center pieces then, wow, that blows my mind.

And like I said a whole bunch of rustic wedding things are super easy to make. I would go as far as saying you can make just about everything. I mean somebody has to make it right? Maybe I would be a little careful making wedding invitations, but that isn’t because they are rustic wedding invitations. Just that my printer isn’t that great and if I had to print hundreds of cards on it it would probably strike on me.

I have seen some really nice rustic invitations people have made for their weddings on Pinterest though and they even added twine ribbons and stuff. Very cute.

But getting back to the mason jars.

Once you have all of the supplies we’re ready to make our table center pieces. Every wedding reception should have some and the ones for rustic weddings are just mason jars so it is almost too easy.

Do you have all of your supplies at hand?

Now the first thing you need to do is put a little paint in a jar. One at a time and roll and rotate the jar until you get the entire inside covered. Don’t worry if you get a little over the lip, that is fine and I think that it even looks a little bit better.

You can do this in the same color but if you have more than one picked out, work them off one color at a time. Else you might end up with too much to do.

When you get done you should have a pretty good feel for how much paint you need in each jar to get it filled. As you can see I used small jars so I really only needed like a table spoon or so to cover the inside.

Now before we go on. And I need to make this clear, stop.

I know you want to keep going. You’re excited and the whole thing is going so well. Well that is why we stop here.

The decorations for rustic weddings don’t have to be perfect, they do have to be nice and the thing that will ruin your work now is if you get paint on your ribbons.

Mine sat for two days before they were completely dry.

You can just check them once or twice a day. When the paint doesn’t feel sticky when you touch them it is alright to continue.

For the burlap lacey looking ribbons, what I did was wrap the ribbon around the jar and then I doubled the length.

I thought that I would have to trim but when I made big bows the thing looked fine.

Now that is everything you need. That sure beats paying $5 a a mason jar on Etsy. And you will be glad knowing that your wedding decorations got the rustic touch from your crafty hands.

This is the first of a series of DIY rustic wedding decorations I am working on. Did you like it? Do you think it should be improved? Just tell me and I will see what I can do.

Got It!

So this sort of came to me through accident, I was thinking that I might go and make Kaitlynn’s World a permanent feature of the site. Sort of like something that springs up from time to time and just like hits you with pearls and wisdom. Those are two different things BTW. I really have never had the pearls of wisdom that people talk about, mine are always like sort of singular. As in separate.

This will be the first of what is certainly going to be very few times I ask you for ideas or input, sorry I’m selfish like that, and if you think that the ideas is good. Well let me know in the comments. And if you don’t like the idea then tell me too. But if nobody says anything then I will assume that, yay, you’re just overwhelmed by my brilliance and forgot to leave a comment.
